We all have people that we care for all around us. We have family, friends, coworkers, neighbors, and others. As we continue our relationships with all of these people, many of them will go through various difficulties. One of the things that is hard for us as we watch our loved ones go through difficulties is knowing how to respond.
We want to say the perfect thing, but we don’t know what that is. Or we want to do something that will make them feel better. We want to offer help, but we don’t know what will be useful.
The best thing that we can do is to love them. I love this quote from an unknown author:
A wise physician said, “The best medicine for humans is love.”
Someone asked, “If it doesn’t work?”
He smiled and answered, “Increase the dose.”
I understand wanting to say the perfect thing to someone. But I’ve learned that there isn’t a perfect response or a perfect thing to do for someone going through a difficult time. The only thing that will help is love.
There are many ways to show love for other people. I’ve found that one of the ways to make them truly feel that you love them is to listen from the heart. Even when we are worried about someone going through a difficult time, it is easy to not fully listen.
We might listen and only be thinking about our response, or what we can tell them to do to fix the problem. We might listen and be thinking about the next thing that we have to do. Or if they called, we might still be thinking about what the phone call interrupted.
Show love by taking the time to really listen to what those you care about are telling you. Listen to make them feel heard. Show them you love them by listening with your heart.
